Appearance

Fukasaku is a green toad topped with white hair shaped into a rough mohawk, marked by bushy brows and a little goatee. He has worn two styles of cape, one high-collared and one plainer. Seared permanently into his back is a coded warning Jiraiya carved about Pain before dying, revealing that the enemy's true body was not among those on display, a mark that can never be removed.

Personality

Widely regarded as wise and commanding deep respect, Fukasaku nonetheless squabbles endlessly with his wife Shima over trifles, even in the thick of a crisis, though the two remain devoted; she was devastated when Pain killed him. He stays composed in the grimmest moments and is fond of ribbing the Great Toad Sage for his forgetfulness. He took quickly to Naruto, finding the boy's nickname for Jiraiya both apt and amusing when they first met over the news of Jiraiya's death, and after seeing how fast Naruto learned, he came to believe the young ninja would one day eclipse his old student.

History

Fukasaku's tie to the Leaf runs through Jiraiya, whom he greeted when the young shinobi first reverse-summoned himself to Mount Myōboku and later took on as a student of senjutsu, the art of drawing in natural energy and blending it with one's own chakra to fuel a far stronger state. Fighting beside Shima, he is a dangerous opponent: she projects a serpent-like extension from her belly to flush out a target while he lashes with his tongue, both can loose crushing gusts of wind, and together they wield the Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant, a sound-based genjutsu that paralyzes its victims but leaves the pair hoarse and cannot be repeated. His senjutsu grants him strength enough to hurl even Gamabunta, and Gamakichi notes he can gather natural energy almost instantly.

When Jiraiya went to face Pain, Fukasaku and Shima answered his summons and perched on his shoulders to sustain his Sage Mode, advising and attacking as needed; their combined effort matched three of Pain's bodies before more appeared. As the fight turned hopeless, Jiraiya sent Shima back to Konoha with a captured Animal Path and kept Fukasaku beside him, carving a coded message into the toad's back before his death. Fukasaku carried the news to Konoha, let its ninja photograph the message, and then brought Naruto to Mount Myōboku to train him.

He guided Naruto through the stages of Sage Mode, striking him with a staff to stop him absorbing too much natural energy, and taught him Frog Kata, though the Nine-Tails sealed inside the boy made the fusion he had shared with Jiraiya impossible. When Pain leveled Konoha, Shima summoned Naruto, Fukasaku, and a host of toads to the ruins, and the pair helped fend off the Animal Path's summons. Pain struck Fukasaku down before he and Shima could land another genjutsu, but he was among those restored when the defeated Pain revived his victims. Later he summoned Naruto once more to Mount Myōboku on the Great Toad Sage's orders, helping him swallow Gerotora before sending him home.
