Shima, honoured across Mount Myoboku as its Mother of the Toad Way, is an elder sage toad of that mountain. With her husband Fukasaku, both heirs to the Great Toad Sage, she makes up the pair known as the Two Great Sage Toads, pairing keen battlefield judgement with deep mastery of senjutsu.
Shima's underside is green, with purple markings ringing her mouth and running along her back. The crown of her head resembles a hair net stretched over rollers, an effect that lends her a distinctly elderly look. She has been seen in two styles of cape, one with a tall collar and a plainer version.
Open-hearted and clear-sighted, Shima is beloved by every toad, who hail her by that same title, and her great age and wisdom command wide respect. That does not stop her from squabbling with Fukasaku over trifles such as a missed dinner, yet she loves him dearly, addressing him fondly as "Dad" in the manner of many Japanese wives, and she was left grief-stricken when Pain struck him down. Like her husband she is quick to grumble that the Great Toad Sage has grown senile.
She was fond of Jiraiya and warmly welcomed his pupil Naruto to Mount Myoboku, sparing no effort at their home. During the battle for Konoha, after Pain had impaled Fukasaku and driven Naruto down against the earth, Shima called out for the boy not to surrender, reminding him that Jiraiya and Fukasaku had both laid down their lives out of faith in him.
Shima is prized for her sharp reading of a battle, quickly settling on the best plan and then acting as the control centre that sees it carried out. Her sensing is excellent, owing much to her tongue, which lets her pin down and seize an enemy, and the warts along that tongue can secrete a highly corrosive mucus. She commands enormous chakra, enough to enter Sage Mode, and once summoned Gamahiro, Gamaken, Gamabunta, Naruto, Fukasaku, and Gamakichi all at once through a single technique.
She wields Fire and Wind Release, most notably teaming with Fukasaku and Jiraiya for a fierce combined assault, and can even fold senjutsu chakra into her wind attacks for extra lethality. Working in unison, she and Fukasaku can cast Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant, an illusion workable only through the harmony of their long marriage. Her greatest weapon, though, is her command of senjutsu, which she calls on to boost how far and how hard her strikes land and to force her body past its limits, stretching her tongue beyond ten metres. She and Fukasaku sat on Jiraiya's shoulders to feed him natural energy against Pain, and during Pain's assault on Konoha she screened Naruto with a cloud of dust so he could finish the Animal Path.
