Appearance

Gaara has pale skin, green eyes, and short auburn hair, worn spiky in his youth and neatly parted to the right by adulthood. He has no visible pupils and no eyebrows, a detail others sometimes mock, and dark tanuki-like rings circle his eyes from years of sleeplessness. On the left side of his forehead he long ago etched the kanji for "love," keeping his hair parted so that it stays in view.

As a boy he dressed in a dark bodysuit and carried his sand gourd on a broad leather strap. By Part II he wore a crimson coat over a grey vest, secured with buckled belts that also held the gourd, and on formal occasions the traditional Kazekage robes. In adulthood he takes to a trench coat.

Personality

Gaara begins life as a gentle child who tries to reach out to Suna's people, but their terror of the beast within him, and the staged betrayal of his loving uncle Yashamaru, shatter him. Convinced that no one will ever care for him, he resolves to love only himself and to prove his own existence by killing everyone he meets, earning the dreaded name "Gaara of the Sand Waterfall." Shukaku's whispered urgings and the insomnia they inflict deepen his instability, yet the hatred is his own: he views every other living person as a threat to his survival. His defeat at Naruto Uzumaki's hands is the turning point. Seeing that Naruto draws strength from protecting friends rather than from isolation, Gaara begins to remake himself in his rival's image, mending his bonds with Temari and Kankurō and finding people worth dying for.

That transformation carries him to the office of Fifth Kazekage, where he trades feared weapon for devoted guardian. He forgives his father for the assassination attempts, understanding they were meant to shield the village, and pours himself into serving Suna and reforming the wider shinobi world, championing cooperation among the Five Kage in the same spirit Naruto once showed him. Composed and principled, a man of few words, he leads by example, and beneath the calm he feels deeply, moved to tears by Sasuke's refusal to change and by learning of his mother's love. As an adult he grows wiser still, adopting the uncontrollable Shinki so the boy might have the loving family he himself was denied.

History

Sunagakure's Fourth Kazekage has the tailed beast Shukaku sealed into Gaara before birth, costing the life of his mother Karura and marking him as the village's living weapon. Gaara controls sand carried in a gourd, crushing enemies from afar with techniques like the Sand Waterfall Funeral while an automatic Shield of Sand, secretly powered by his mother's enduring love rather than the beast, guards him so completely that he goes years without a wound. He keeps this control even after Shukaku is removed, and he inherits his father's Magnet Release. Sent to Konoha's Chūnin Exams, he cheats undetected, slaughters rival teams, and cripples Rock Lee, but Sasuke Uchiha's Chidori draws his blood for the first time and badly unnerves him. When the invasion of Konoha begins, his fight with Sasuke spirals into a full Shukaku transformation, and Naruto, summoning Gamabunta, finally beats him and speaks the words that change his life.

Two years on, Gaara has become the Fifth Kazekage. The Akatsuki soon strike: Deidara captures him and the organisation extracts Shukaku, killing him, until the elder Chiyo trades her own life to bring him back. Thereafter he leads the fight against the Akatsuki as supreme commander of the alliance's combat divisions. On the battlefield he confronts his reincarnated father Rasa, from whom he finally learns the truth about his mother's protective love, and joins the other Kage against a reincarnated Madara Uchiha. As the war peaks he helps wrench Shukaku's chakra free of the enemy, fails to stop the beast from being sealed, and races a dying Naruto to safety.

Years after the peace, Gaara raises his adopted son Shinki and stays close to Naruto's family, whose children treat him as an uncle. He defends Suna against the Ōtsutsuki clan, clashing with Urashiki and joining the Kage against Momoshiki, and in the New Era he faces a sentient God Tree that overruns the village, shielding the young genin at the cost of a grave injury.
