Personality

Cruel and consumed by vengeance, Karyu spares no one, even those with no real part in his ruin, and Sasuke observes that he echoes the man Sasuke used to be. His obsession with Sasuke runs deep, worshipping him as a 'master' while still hungering to eclipse and slay him. In the anime he comes off as more timid, unnerved by Sasuke once they have clashed.

History

His people wield Lava Release, but the little village he calls home views such gifts as nothing more than throwaway armaments, and its users rarely live long, unlike the honoured lava-wielders in places like Kumogakure. Wanting no such end, Karyu bolts, and his hunters almost run him down before Fushin reaches him first and pulls him into the Lightning Group, an outfit of kekkei genkai bearers who defend the powerless. They plunder wrongdoers and pass the loot to hard-up hamlets like Bamboo Village, earning a hero's name, until a Kirigakure plot guts the band; the survivors flee to those same villages, but dread of Kiri's revenge slams the doors, and a hurt comrade dies for want of shelter. Scraping by in hiding like a rat, Karyu catches wind of Sasuke Uchiha defying the great villages out in the open at the Five Kage Summit and chooses to walk that road, founding the Dark Thunder Group to hit back at the settlements that turned the Lightning Group away. Fusing earth with fire, he shapes a black, rubbery compound into rebounding orbs and shielding barriers. As his group tears through the Land of Hot Water, Sasuke is paid to stop them; steeped in his idol's tricks, Karyu slips the genjutsu and blunts the lightning, only to lose regardless, and the captured group perishes when Io, a father whose daughter they killed, torches the shed holding them.
