Naruto lunges at Tsunade with an unfinished Rasengan, but she cracks the ground open and drops him into a fissure, smothering the strike. She scolds Jiraiya for handing the boy a jutsu she believes is beyond him. Refusing the insult, Naruto swears he can perfect it in three days, and his stubbornness stirs memories of the people Tsunade buried. She takes the bet but stretches the deadline to a full week. If Naruto succeeds, she will grant that he could reach the Hokage's seat and hand over the necklace that once belonged to the First Hokage. If he fails, Gama-chan and its coins become hers.

Naruto accepts the terms and throws himself into training. That night, Jiraiya joins Tsunade at a shop, and their talk turns to Dan, Nawaki, Naruto, and Orochimaru. He reminds her that everyone she mourned died for the village, and that aiding Orochimaru would render those sacrifices meaningless. Meanwhile, Shizune fills Naruto in on Tsunade's history and the truth about the pendant. It is no simple ornament, she warns, because anyone other than Tsunade who wears it meets an early death.

As Shizune speaks, Tsunade perches atop the gate of Tanzaku Quarters, thoughts circling back to her younger brother and the man she loved, both lost to deaths she could not stop.
