Keep on Training: Pop Goes the Water Balloon!

Barely into his lessons, Naruto cannot get the Rasengan to work at all. He begs Jiraiya for pointers and then boasts that three days will be enough to conquer it. Jiraiya scoffs, pointing out that the Fourth Hokage needed three years to shape the technique into its finished form, and that bursting a water balloon is only the opening step of three. Left alone in the woods, Naruto trains for days while Jiraiya amuses himself with the local women. Nothing clicks until he watches the inn's cat spin a balloon apart. Copying the idea, he holds the balloon still in one hand and uses chakra from the other to churn the water in clashing directions until it splits. The method needs two hands rather than one, which is against the point, yet Jiraiya rules that the first stage is cleared.

The next stage trades the water balloon for a rubber ball, far tougher to pop. Naruto demands assistance, but Jiraiya insists he is no longer a child and must work it out alone, a lesson underscored when Naruto watches a father and son share a popsicle in town and quietly wishes for the same company. Weeks pass with Jiraiya still mingling with the townswomen and Naruto's arms aching from failure. Refusing to quit, he clamps the ball in both hands and drives raw chakra into it despite the pain, finally tearing a hole rather than a full burst. Though he is let down by the incomplete result, Jiraiya praises the progress and rewards him with a popsicle, which Naruto gladly takes.

The installment sits within the Search for Tsunade arc and draws from chapter 151 of the manga. It opens with the theme GO!!! and closes with Many Times Before. Much of its charm comes from the contrast between Jiraiya's carefree town life and Naruto's grinding, solitary practice, with the shared popsicle serving as a small emotional payoff at the end.
