The Legacy!

Chiyo begins her reincarnation ninjutsu on Gaara to atone for her past, and Naruto's attempt to interrupt is stopped by Sakura, who explains the elder is restoring him to life. Neji and Kakashi both sense such a technique demands a heavy personal price. When Chiyo's chakra runs too low to finish, Naruto offers his own. She recalls Kakashi's words that Naruto, a jinchūriki himself, alone understands Gaara's suffering, which fuels his drive to save him. Drawing on his chakra, she tells Naruto his gift for befriending anyone will make him a Hokage unlike any before, and assures Sakura she will one day surpass Tsunade. Chiyo hopes for a kinder future for both Suna and Konoha, admitting that only reviving Gaara has felt truly right in a life she believes she spent wrongly.

Gaara's spirit returns, and the vision of his lonely, weeping child self is met by a young Naruto's hand on his shoulder and a smile. Waking, he finds Naruto there in truth, surrounded by Suna's soldiers cheering through their tears. Kankurō thanks Naruto, who deflects credit to Chiyo, assuming she merely fainted. Kankurō then reveals she is dead, having traded her life for Gaara's. Temari marvels that only after meeting Naruto would Chiyo sacrifice herself for a Kazekage, and Kakashi notes she died passing the future to Naruto and Gaara. As Sakura weeps and Ebizō remarks how peaceful his sister looks, Gaara rises to his feet and calls for a prayer to send Chiyo off.

Chiyo performs her reincarnation technique on Gaara, supplemented by Naruto's chakra, and predicts great futures for both Naruto and Sakura. Gaara is revived, but Chiyo dies, having given her own life in exchange. The gathered Suna forces celebrate his return, and Gaara leads a prayer honoring Chiyo's sacrifice.

Episode thirty-one of Naruto: Shippūden adapts chapters two-hundred-seventy-nine and two-hundred-eighty during the Kazekage Rescue Mission arc. It aired in Japan on October 18, 2007, and in English on April 14, 2010. The opening theme is Distance and the ending is Your Story. Naruto compares Chiyo's selfless death to that of the Third Hokage.
