Eager to train under his old teacher once more, Naruto meets Kakashi in an open field. Kakashi lays out the two-part path to an original jutsu: reshaping one's chakra and then infusing it with an elemental nature. He points to the Rasengan as a flawless case of the first step, since spinning chakra into a dense sphere is exactly that kind of shape change. Naruto assumes he is already halfway there, but he has no idea which nature his chakra carries.

Kakashi outlines the five natures most people fall into, fire, wind, earth, water, and lightning, and demonstrates by explaining how his Chidori applies his lightning nature to gathered chakra. Naruto deduces that Sasuke must hold two natures given his fire and lightning jutsu. To identify Naruto's own, Kakashi hands him a slip of chakra-sensitive litmus paper, noting that lightning wrinkles it, wind splits it, fire chars it, water dampens it, and earth crumbles it. Naruto channels his chakra, and the paper tears cleanly in half, confirming a wind affinity. Yamato then appears and shows off his earth and water jutsu, and Kakashi explains that fusing two natures is far harder than using either alone, citing Yamato's Wood Release and Haku's Ice Release as kekkei genkai combinations. To slash the training time, Kakashi has Naruto lean on his shadow clones, since dispelling them returns their accumulated experience, though Yamato is on hand to suppress the fox should Naruto tap its chakra.

The episode adapts chapters 314, 315, and 316 and opens the Twelve Guardian Ninja arc's nature-training thread. Kakashi reveals he cannot sustain as many clones as Naruto because Naruto carries roughly four times his chakra reserves, or a hundredfold with the Nine-Tails factored in. Naruto ends the session by tearing a leaf slightly, an early sign of progress.
