Denken

Age shows plainly on Denken, an old man whose brown hair gives way to a long, dense beard. A monocle rests over his left eye, and he favors a flowing black robe finished with white collars.

In the public eye Denken is a hardened, scheming politician who outlasted every rival in the power games of the Imperial Capital. The reality is warmer: he forges bonds with people almost despite themselves, going so far as to court Richter's friendship away from the exam grounds. Among mages he is an oddity who prizes teamwork over solo glory and actively gathers allies, and he places little stock in chasing raw power for its own sake. To him the worth of magic lies in the craft itself, a conviction Frieren happens to share. As a leader he is measured and thoughtful, the first candidate to crack Frieren's plan during the opening trial and the one who assembles a unit for the second, lamenting how few of his peers care to cooperate.

Denken carries the rank of first-class only after a hard life. Born in the Weise Region and orphaned when demons killed his parents, he was raised by the local lord Glück and apprenticed in his youth to Macht, the family's personal mage. He joined the Imperial army's mages chiefly to win the influence he hoped would save his ailing wife, Lektüre, yet she died before his rise could help her. Her loss haunts him, and for years he could not bear to revisit the happy memories of their home, postponing any return until the Golden Land's spread sealed the region off entirely. Those very memories become the spark for his late-life mission to bring down Macht and restore his birthplace. Lernen, a friend of many years, paints him as gifted and fierce, a man who defended him to the bitter end of his army career, and Serie, struck by the passion he still carries, passes him through the exam's final interview. Childless and without grandchildren, he dotes on younger people like Laufen, Fern, and Stark, spoiling them before the group goes its separate ways.

Reaching first-class places Denken among fewer than fifty mages ever to hold the title before his exam. His sense for mana is sharp enough that he alone detected the faint traces Kanne left in the water during the first trial, and he pinpointed the moment Frieren cast a binding spell. A shrewd tactician, he readily turns to his fists when the situation calls for it, blending physical fighting with a broad spell list. He can whip up a tornado with Waldgose and convert that wind into a roaring blaze through Daosdorg, or rain down exploding arrows of light using Catastravia. His command of Zoltraak runs deep, refined over more than half a century until he can fire a tightly compressed bolt from his bare hand. Hexagonal shields and flight round out his fundamentals. His trump card is Mistilziela, a curse-reflecting spell so demanding that it normally requires a century of practice no human could complete; granted the title of first-class, he asks Serie for it as his privilege, and she gifts both the spell and her own hundred years of training so he can turn Macht's Diagoldze back against its caster.
