Long purple hair, grown out to her waist and framed by bangs, marks Fern's look, with two trailing strands shaping her face in a hime-style cut that she pins partway back. Her eyes share the same purple shade, and her features reflect her Southern Lands roots. A calm, often stoic expression suits her composed nature, and once she passed sixteen she outgrew Frieren and filled out a more womanly frame. Her everyday outfit pairs a white buttoned dress, its Victorian collar frilled and its sleeves full, with black boots, topped outdoors by a hooded black coat lined in gray. She treasures two gifts she wears constantly: a butterfly ornament from Frieren that holds her hair back, and a mirrored-lotus bracelet given by Stark. In battle she raises a wooden staff bound in purple ribbon, a keepsake from her adoptive father Heiter.

The hardships of her childhood left Fern unusually grown-up, and she tends to mother the rest of the party. She is forever rousing the late-sleeping Frieren, feeding her, dressing her, and tidying her messes, and she scolds Stark much the same way when he stays up too late. Beneath that responsible surface, though, she bruises easily and can turn petty when she feels slighted, sulking and freezing people out until a peace offering of food or a met demand wins her back. When something makes her suspicious or curious, she trails and observes the person rather than asking outright.

Her devotion to magic runs straight back to her losses. After demons orphaned her in the Southern Lands, a grieving Fern nearly took her own life, and only the priest Heiter's words, urging her to live on for the good memories she still held, stopped her. She threw herself into study with fierce discipline, determined to show Heiter he could die at peace without fretting over her, and that drive carried her to remarkable heights. Frieren came to acknowledge her outright, and she rarely buckles under pressure, keeping a clear head against foes stronger and more seasoned than herself. Magic became her anchor; without it, she has said, she feels cast into darkness.

From early childhood Fern showed a rare gift for governing her mana and shrinking her presence. By Falsch's account she is the youngest mage ever to pass the third-class exam, and she did so with the top score. Serie likewise rated her potential as limitless, and she can even read ancient elvish. Two skills stand above the rest. Her mana concealment may surpass Frieren's own, since she can keep moving while fully hidden where her teacher must hold still, a knack that let her blindside the demon Lügner and steal up on the Northern Corps captain Wirbel undetected. Her mana detection is finer still than anyone else introduced so far; she sensed the instability in Serie's mana that even Lernen, Serie's pupil of fifty years, had missed, which prompted Serie to claim her as an apprentice on the spot.

Where Fern truly outpaces her mentor is sheer casting speed. She trails Frieren in raw technique and mana, but she fires spells so quickly that fights end faster when she takes the lead; against Lügner she loosed volley after volley of Zoltraak at once to overwhelm his attempts to outlast her. Zoltraak is the lone attack spell she uses, wielded with the ease of long practice and packed to greater density without losing pace. Her remaining repertoire leans practical: hexagonal defensive barriers, flight she can sustain for roughly half an hour, telekinesis to lift objects, a glow that snares birds, a flame conjured at her fingertip, a sight spell that sees through clothing, and a prized gift from Serie that leaves any garment spotless and faintly perfumed.
