Appearance

Lehrer cuts a tall, lean figure in his later years, his gray hair combed back in a neat side part above a gaunt, angular face set with high cheekbones and drooping eyelids. He dresses formally in a brown three-piece suit, the long jacket and waistcoat worn above a high-collared white shirt, a broad black bow lying flat at his throat and polished black shoes below. In his fighting youth his features were smooth and unmarked; back then he donned a pale cloak pinned by a round emblem over dark battle dress, a jointed gauntlet sheathing one hand, tall armored boots on his legs, and a sword riding at his left hip from a belt.

Personality

Strict yet fatherly, Lehrer pours his loyalty into Löwe and works to keep his charge from bearing every weight alone. He owns his failures squarely; standing in the wreckage of Löwe's birthplace, he told the grieving boy to lay the blame on him. Long ago he held to a belief that if people simply kept fighting to shield one another, a hero would one day rise to deliver peace. No such savior ever came, so he resolved to carry that hope on his own shoulders.

History

Lehrer earned his name on the battlefields of the Southern Lands decades ago, a region locked in ceaseless war where he was celebrated for never losing a fight. Among the people he came to know was the father of a boy named Held, whom he visited more than once.

He reached Held's village only after a column of light had wiped it out and slain the child's parents. He found the boy straining to right a toppled statue of Himmel the Hero and lent his strength to lift it. From there he became Held's guardian and teacher, and in later years he took a place in the Empire at his former student's side, serving as butler and confidant once Held rose to become Löwe, Governor-General of the Lorbeer Domain.

When the Empire's Foundation Festival arrives, Lehrer backs Löwe's scheme to wipe out magic and kill the Great Mage Serie. He spies on Frieren and her companions through binoculars until she catches him watching, judges her a lesser threat next to the Serie plot, and sits in on the planning with Löwe and Clematis. On the evening of the Ball he climbs to the palace rooftop with Löwe, reports the operation's progress, and gently reminds him by his old name, Held, that he need not shoulder it all alone. In his prime Lehrer was reckoned the single strongest warrior of his homeland, an undefeated swordsman across countless battles, though how much of that power survives into his old age is unclear.
