Atsuko Tanaka

Atsuko Tanaka, the veteran Japanese voice actress who played Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, died in August 2024. Her performance as Flamme stood among her final credited anime roles before her death.

Across more than four decades, Tanaka voiced Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, Konan in Naruto, Lisa Lisa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen. She also played the legendary mage Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Atsuko Tanaka provided the Japanese voice for Bayonetta in her own franchise. It was one of many roles across her long career, alongside parts like Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Atsuko Tanaka trained at the Tokyo Announcement Academy after years working as a Tokyo office employee, and spent the rest of her career affiliated with the talent agency Mausu Promotion. She became one of anime's most recognizable voices over a career spanning from 1980 to 2024.

Tanaka voiced Flamme, the legendary mage whose magic and history loom over the story of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. The part called on the gravitas she brought to older, formidable figures, fitting Flamme's stature as a foundational figure in the series' magical lore.
