Personality

Warm and devoted toward the people she loves, Kana dreams of becoming a skilled doctor one day. When she discovered that Hatori was possessed by the dragon, she embraced him without hesitation. Hatori notes how closely her sunny, encouraging nature mirrors Tohru's, and Mayuko sums her up as someone with a frank, outgoing spirit. That sensitivity is also her weakness: after Akito struck Hatori and then pinned the blame on her, she absorbed the accusation completely and drowned in guilt over being unable to help him.

History

Two years before the series begins, Kana came on as Hatori's assistant. She once asked him what snow becomes after it melts; taking the question literally, he answered water, only for her to laugh and declare it turns into spring. The two soon fell for each other, though Hatori hesitated to let anyone close because of his curse. When he transformed before her, she finally understood his caution yet refused to pull away, promising to remain at his side.

After a couple of months together they asked Akito for permission to marry. The answer was violence: Akito wounded one of Hatori's eyes and then savaged Kana with blame, convincing her the injury was her doing. Consumed by guilt, she sank into a depression she could not climb out of, until Hatori erased her memories of their romance so she might find peace; before they faded, she apologized for failing to protect him. Kana left the Sohma house to chase her career and later became engaged to a man outside the family. Believing she had only ever carried an unrequited crush, she is genuinely happy in her new life, and Hatori, catching a glimpse of that joy, silently wishes her well. She marries with Mayuko and Ayame present while Hatori stays away, and she even hopes her best friend Mayuko might one day find happiness with him.
