Mitsuru

Office wear defines her everyday look, usually plain blouses paired with narrow skirts and heels. She stands short with a slender frame and pale skin. Her hair, cropped to ear length and cut straight across, sits in a grayish purple shade and is finished with short baby bangs over the brow. Her eyes read as pale purple, though certain scenes tint them closer to gray. The 2001 adaptation draws both her hair and eyes in brown instead.

Anxiety governs nearly everything Mitsuru does. She buckles under pressure, spirals straight into worst-case thinking, and refuses to let go until she gets her way. Her distress can turn alarmingly theatrical: Tohru first encounters her while she is threatening to end her life over Shigure vanishing before another deadline, and a later scene shows her drafting a farewell note to her parents for the very same reason. Shigure finds this entertaining and needles her on purpose, and she is trusting enough to keep falling for it.

For all that, she is clear-eyed about her own faults, doubting she is even suited to editing because her nerves and emotions so often run away with her. Even so, she throws herself into the work, and beneath the hysterics she is warm, encouraging, and swift to sympathize with others, which shows most plainly in the way she treats Ritsu.

Mitsuru first turns up outside Shigure's home, pleading for him to hand over overdue manuscripts and threatening self-harm before Shigure and Tohru step in; she brightens the moment he finally settles down to work. Through the second year she keeps chasing him for pages even after he dodges her with a sushi-restaurant ruse. Shigure manipulates Ritsu Sohma into driving her away, yet Ritsu, mistaking her for a stalker, softens when he watches her begin another suicide note.

After a finished manuscript is ruined by spilled coffee, the pair bond that night over a shared sense of being burdens with no reason to live; Ritsu's words about living for someone else give her the strength to carry on, and a friendship forms. Later she visits the Sohma estate and marvels at how young and lovely the family head Akito looks. Once Shigure's curse breaks and he abandons writing to be with Akito, Mitsuru and Ritsu reunite in relief that their tormentor is gone, and the series closes implying the two have become a couple.
