It Was So Foolish

Tohru stops by to see Rin, who has moved into Kazuma's home, and Haru reads the faint blush on her face as proof that she is secretly glad of the visit even while feigning irritation. When Yuki asks where Akito had confined her, Haru keeps quiet that it was the Cat's Room, respecting Rin's wish that Tohru never learn of it. Kazuma notes that Kyo himself is soon to be shut away in that same room, and Kyo reasons that Rin's company at the house will at least spare his foster father the ache of solitude.

Yuki offers to accompany Tohru to her mother's grave as the anniversary approaches, and Kyo regretfully bows out of going.

Shigure calls on Rin and learns she had begged Ren for a way to lift the Sohma curse. He assures her that Ren was lying, since their closeness has shown him she knows nothing of the sort, and he predicts the curse will dissolve on its own just as it already did for Kureno, this being the first time every zodiac bearer lives at once and the generation summoned to the final banquet. Tohru catches these words and presses him on whether it might end before spring seals Kyo away. Shigure answers that the cat will be locked up regardless, that all the others quietly accept it because his greater monstrousness comforts them, and he needles Tohru by suggesting she loves Kyo. Shaken, she flees, and when Kyo finds her weeping and asks the reason, she confesses she feels lost, so he tells her it is fine to cry.

At Kyoko's grave, Kyo questions why her father addresses Tohru as Kyoko, and the old man explains he does it to keep his daughter's memory alive. He reveals that Tohru adopted her odd manner of speech after losing her own father, mimicking him so her grieving mother would stay happy and not slip away too. Later Kagura hides from Tohru at Kazuma's, convinced she has lost Kyo, while Kazuma quietly hopes the girl loves his son out of something truer than pity. Tohru tells Rin that Kyo has become the most precious thing to her, taking the place her mother once held, and Kagura bursts out that she ought to say as much to Kyo directly.

A remembered scene shows Kyoko showing a young Kyo a photograph of her daughter, and a night when he glimpsed her eating alone through a window and worried she was lonely, a worry that lingers in him still. Back home, Kyo asks Tohru about her father, and she breaks down over having once cast him as a villain she feared would steal her mother, only for Kyo to reassure her that she surely brought Kyoko joy. Their embrace through a hanging bedsheet trips his transformation, and a photo of her father afterward, with its blue hat, jars loose a memory Kyo had buried. The title comes from one of Kyo's own lines, and the episode weaves together chapters 107, 108, 109, and 114, pulling chapter 114's events far forward from their later manga placement.
