Let's Go Home

Kyo's mind drifts back to a mother who forever fussed over his bead bracelet, dreading the form it kept hidden. When Tohru finally reaches him beside a lake, he snarls and bolts, only for Yuki to seize and hold him. Taking hold of his arm, Tohru admits the sight of him frightens her yet insists she still wants to remain at his side. The words settle him, and as the downpour lifts and the sun climbs, he shifts back to human. He confesses that his mother always swore she loved him even while she feared what he truly was.

Their embrace tips Kyo into his cat shape, and Tohru carries him back cradled in her arms with a contented Yuki trailing behind, the pair met by a relieved Shigure and Kazuma. Kazuma soon bids Kyo goodbye and departs. Afterward Tohru asks Shigure to let her speak with Akito, and in private he tells her that Akito holds the very heart of the curse and has little time left to live. Escorted by Yuki, Shigure, and Hatori, Tohru travels to the main Sohma estate for the meeting.

Unable to explain why she has come, Tohru finds Akito lunging to grab her hair before Yuki and Shigure pin him back, and pity wells up in her as she urges him to remember he still has a life ahead. Loosening his grip, Akito comes to understand that she truly accepts the family's curse. This final entry of the 2001 series notably lets Kyo revert without his beads restored, a likely sign that acceptance itself suppresses the true form. In this version he only emits inhuman shrieks while transformed, and the adaptation frames Yuki's protectiveness toward Kyo as love rather than the plain friendship of the manga.
