Cray

Cray is shown as a grown man who serves in the clerical ranks of Reole's Church of Leto, holding the office of deacon under Cornello. He goes about armed with a pistol, though few other details of his appearance are recorded.

Cray is a genuine true believer, wholly committed to Cornello and the teachings of Letoism, and completely blind to the fact that he and his fellow worshippers are being deceived. Cornello exploits that devotion to point him at his enemies. The versions differ on his conscience: in the manga he knowingly signs on to Cornello's schemes and is happy to manipulate innocents like Rose, while the 2003 anime frames him as a sincere man who truly thinks he is upholding sacred principles.

As Cornello's deacon, Cray enforces the false priest's doctrines and knows at least something of his plan to raise a rebel force inside the town, yet his faith keeps him from seeing the deception behind it. Playing on that loyalty, Cornello sends him to kill Edward and Alphonse before the pair can expose the church's scheme to the authorities. Cray badly misjudges the brothers and is beaten with ease.

When he comes to, Cray is rattled by the accidental confession Cornello lets slip over the broadcast, and pressing his leader for answers only leads him to realize that the dead Cornello has been swapped out for the homunculus Envy. Unwilling to let their secret slip, the homunculi silence him for good. Much later, in the 2009 anime and the manga alike, his bones turn up among the debris inside the false Gate within Gluttony's stomach, after Envy, Ling Yao, and Ed are themselves devoured there.
