Dominic is an aging automail engineer with a gruff, standoffish bearing, the sort of stern old craftsman who keeps to the mountains above Rush Valley and tends to greet visitors with more scowls than warmth.

His rough, antisocial manner hides a genuinely kind and generous nature and a deep love of his trade. When he came across the young Paninya, left helpless after a crippling accident, he took her in and fitted her with fine automail, insisting only that her constant self-pity had annoyed him. He has no patience for students and turns Winry Rockbell away again and again, though he points her toward Atelier Garfiel instead. The mere mention of Pinako Rockbell, whom he calls the Pantheress of Resembool, sets him trembling with dread.

A gifted engineer, Dominic dreams of concealing serious weaponry inside automail without altering a limb's everyday look or size, and he has already outfitted Paninya with a concealed shin blade and a compact carbine tucked into her legs. In the manga his family surrounds him, including his son Ridel, daughter-in-law Satella, and an infant grandson. The 2003 anime keeps his role much the same but drops the family and makes Paninya his assistant, closing with him watching Winry train in Rush Valley, a hint that he took her on after all. The 2009 anime trims his fraught history with Pinako, having him send Winry to Garfiel out of thanks rather than fear.
