Little is set down about how Harris looks beyond his youth and his standard-issue Northern command uniform. The record frames him simply as a green officer of the Amestrian State Military, with no distinguishing marks noted.

Harris comes across as eager but unseasoned. Tasked with spotting a notorious target, he cannot place Edward once the alchemist drops his trademark red coat and braid, and he compounds the blunder by calling his quarry short right to his face, a remark all but guaranteed to end badly.

North City headquarters receives a tip on the whereabouts of Edward and his chimera companions Darius and Heinkel, and Harris joins the detail dispatched to arrest them. Meeting the group without recognizing them, he voices that fateful comment about Ed's height and is knocked cold by one of the alchemist's legendary outbursts. He may well be the final victim of that reflex: when Pride later tries the same taunt beneath Central City, Edward keeps his temper, and as Ed grows taller afterward the nickname loses its sting, drawing only irritation rather than fists.
