Mason

Mason has a heavily muscled build, well suited to his work at Curtis Meats and to the physical tasks he takes on around Dublith. During the Elrics' island training he disguised himself as the masked man, hiding his identity while he pushed the boys to survive.

Mason appears too rarely for much to be pinned down about him, but he comes across as caring and hardworking. He is usually good-humored, cheerful, and easygoing, and he clearly holds real affection for the Elric brothers. The moment that best captures him is cooking fish over a fire so the starving boys would not go hungry.

As Sig Curtis's helper at the Dublith meat shop, Mason knows the Elrics well enough to recognize and greet them the instant they return to town. During their training on the island he wore the mask and stayed close to keep them alive, feeding them hints about the basics of alchemy while they struggled. Beyond the shop he pitches in for Izumi and the boys whenever needed, including gathering information on Alphonse's whereabouts after the kidnapping.

He shows a fair amount of martial skill and raw strength, especially with a club, along with strong survival instincts likely picked up living alongside Izumi and Sig. He also knows the truth behind Izumi's condition and her power to transmute with no circle at all, which is why he abruptly changes the subject whenever the brothers ask why she has no children. In the 2009 anime his early appearances are cut and the masked man is dropped entirely, though his overall role stays the same.
