Appearance

Tinted snow-blindness eyewear shields the most telling part of Miles, a pair of crimson eyes that betray his ancestry. Although only a single grandparent gave him Ishvalan blood, that lineage surfaces most vividly in him, so the coloring reads far stronger than his one-quarter share would suggest. A man in his thirties, he carries the bearing of a seasoned northern officer, and the goggles double as camouflage for the Ishvalan traits he prefers to keep out of plain sight.

Personality

Miles lives by the creed of the northern fortress, embracing its harsh survival-of-the-fittest outlook and returning the fierce loyalty that binds Armstrong's troops together. Reserved and grave, he can strike newcomers as icy and unwelcoming, yet this guardedness is simply how he ushers outsiders into a place where deeds matter more than talk. As a realist, he accepts that his features invite prejudice, but he reframes his mixed ancestry as a strength and openly champions his people, insisting that Amestrians and Ishvalans can share common ground.

A firm moral compass guides him. He kills enemies without flinching when duty demands it, yet he balks at ending Scar out of kinship, and he holds Solf J. Kimblee in open contempt for the alchemist's part in butchering Ishvalans. Kimblee's cruelty both wears on his patience and turns his stomach, revealing a soldier who reserves violence for the protection of others rather than pleasure. Ranked directly below the general, Miles assumes command of Briggs whenever she is away.

History

Miles joined Armstrong's staff in 1908, just as Führer King Bradley's Order 3066 demanded that every Ishvalan in uniform be rounded up during the closing phase of the Ishval Civil War. Rather than surrender him to an internment camp, the general kept him at her side. When he angrily pressed her for a reason, she explained that bigotry only bred casualties and that she prized the balanced view of a man carrying several bloodlines; she even offered him a personal duel should his grudge over his slain relatives ever demand satisfaction. The exchange settled him, and he devoted himself to serving her with honor while chipping away at the prejudice against his people.

Assigned to guide the visiting Elric brothers around the fort, he warms to Edward once the boy answers his sharpness with defiance rather than pity. His duties soon collide with Kimblee, whom he escorts and stalls while Armstrong eliminates Lieutenant General Raven, and his contempt for the alchemist only sharpens. During the operation at Baschool he corners Scar, trades a measure of understanding with the fugitive over their shared roots, then engineers an elaborate escape that spirits Scar, Winry Rockbell, May Chang, Tim Marcoh and others toward Briggs while a staged hostage ruse throws Kimblee off. A collapsing mine buries Edward and Kimblee together, and days of searching turn up nothing until Kimblee resurfaces alongside a Drachman invasion that Briggs crushes even without its general present.

As the Promised Day nears, Izumi Curtis brings warning to Briggs, and Miles helps relay it up the chain through Grumman. He marches north-area troops to a joint exercise in the east, secretly halting the train at Resembool to slip Winry home, and reunites with Grumman only to find Bradley himself watching for treachery. When Father activates the nationwide circle, Miles is among those whose souls are drained, yet Hohenheim's counterplan restores him. Afterward Armstrong reassigns him under Brigadier General Roy Mustang, and he labors beside Scar to rebuild their ancestral Ishval, his final manga appearance a photograph of the two men years later.
