The group takes shape when Roy Mustang leaves Eastern Headquarters for Central Command and Lieutenant General Grumman permits him to carry a handful of trusted officers along. At its core stand five soldiers and a single dog, each slotted into a role that plays to a personal strength. Mustang himself serves as commander, holding the rank of colonel across most of the series before a later promotion returns him to the east as a general.

Riza Hawkeye, the only woman among them, ranks highest of the subordinates as a first lieutenant and answers to Mustang alone, doubling as his aide, bodyguard, and voice of restraint; she is also counted among the finest marksmen in the whole military. Jean Havoc coordinates the others in the field as officer-in-charge, making up for ordinary talent with sheer dedication. Heymans Breda, an academy honors graduate, handles reconnaissance and thrives at slipping past notice. Vato Falman leans on a remarkable memory for intelligence and desk work, while the young sergeant Kain Fuery, the only enlisted man of the bunch, manages communications and mechanical gadgetry. Rounding them out is Black Hayate, Hawkeye's loyal dog, whom Mustang jokingly ranks as a second lieutenant.

Creator Hiromu Arakawa has described the members as forging bonds close enough to resemble a family rather than a mere unit, and that warmth colors how they operate together. Their easy trust lets them shoulder dangerous work without hesitation, each covering for the gaps in the others. Fandom often labels the group Team Mustang, though that name appears nowhere in the source material itself.

In one of the manga's memorable moments, Mustang frames the whole team through the language of chess, casting himself as the King, the irreplaceable center whose fall ends everything. Hawkeye becomes his Queen, the most versatile and fiercely guarded piece, a choice readers take as a nod to their closeness. Havoc is the ever-active Knight, Falman the diagonal-bound Bishop suited to support over frontline duty, Breda the sturdy Rook that shifts between gathering and striking, and the selfless Fuery the Pawn who shields those beside him. Arakawa hinted at the parallel early by setting a chapter cover against a chessboard backdrop.

Beyond its official roster, the unit leans on a rotating cast of allies. Maes Hughes stands as Mustang's oldest confidant, feeding him information and pushing him toward the summit until his murder becomes a personal vendetta. The Elric brothers repeatedly prove dependable partners, willing to defy the military when they judge it corrupt, and Mustang returns the favor by sharing leads and guarding their secret. In the manga's own storyline, further help comes from Madame Christmas, secretly his aunt and informant; Grumman, who conspires against the nation's corrupt leadership; Rebecca Catalina, who hauls in weapons for the final battle; Maria Ross, whom the team smuggles out of prison; and even the killer Barry the Chopper.

By the close of the manga, the members scatter. Hawkeye keeps serving alongside Mustang at the rebuilt Eastern Headquarters, Falman remains posted at Briggs, and Fuery is last glimpsed in uniform at a communications array. Havoc and Breda, photographed in plain clothes beside Rebecca, leave their standing in the service an open question.
