Raven

Raven is a large, broad-chested older man whose tanned skin sets off cropped white hair and a silver-gray beard and brows. His usual dress is the blue uniform of the Amestrian military. For the cold journey north to Fort Briggs he bundles into a brown overcoat with a white scarf beneath it and a pair of gray gloves.

Beneath his warm, flattering manner Raven is grasping and self-serving, so seduced by the dream of never dying that he cannot see he is himself being played by the Homunculi. He preaches survival of the fittest and the ends excusing the means, indifferent to how many of his own countrymen must perish for immortality to be reached. Olivier Armstrong suspects that in his younger days he may have been a decent, honorable officer before greed and the dread of old age hollowed out his sense of duty. Reports from Mustang's informants paint him as lecherous and vain, and he keeps a wife he is implied to betray.

Raven enters the story as Roy Mustang weighs how to exploit what he has learned about King Bradley's inhuman nature. His friendly charm first reads as trustworthy, but when Mustang floats the rumor that the Fuhrer is a Homunculus, Raven marches him into Central Command and repeats it aloud, exposing that the entire high command already serves Father's designs. He later travels to Fort Briggs with a mysterious alchemist doctor to patch up Solf Kimblee, and there Olivier Armstrong and the Elrics bait him into spilling the leadership's plans for the Homunculi and the Philosopher's Stone. Drunk on his own lust and vanity, he boasts of an army of deathless soldiers and offers Armstrong a seat in the coming age of immortality. When she grasps that his frantic urgency springs from a fear of dying before the reward arrives, she runs him through, ordering his corpse and her bloodied gloves sealed into the cement filling the tunnel entrance. He dies stunned that anyone would refuse immortality within arm's reach.
