Richard

Richard is portrayed as a rank-and-file Amestrian soldier of the East Area forces, appearing in the ordinary uniform and kit of an enlisted infantryman. No further distinguishing physical features are recorded for him.

Richard is defined above all by devotion, both to his cause and to his family. He throws himself readily behind Mustang's push to cleanse the government of corruption, yet he never pretends to court death for its own sake. When Mustang offers him a way out should the fighting turn dire, he accepts without shame, wanting only to make it home safely to his wife.

Richard served as an enlisted man under the Flame Alchemist during the Ishvalan civil war. When the long conflict finally ceased, he was among the soldiers who thanked Mustang for shielding his subordinates from needless harm. Seven years later he remained in uniform in the East Area under Lieutenant General Grumman, and when word spread that his former commander was planning a coup against Central's corrupt leadership, Richard and his comrades gladly returned to the field. His background goes largely unexplained in the 2009 anime.
