Rose's Son

The child first appears as a newborn swaddled in a blue blanket, almost always cradled in the arms of Rose or the woman known as Lyra and typically shown either asleep or crying. His eye color has shifted across appearances, rendered brown in the series, a dark blue in the film, and brown once more in the Chibi Party OVA. By the time of Conqueror of Shamballa he has grown into a boy of roughly two or three years.

An unusual trait marks the baby: his moods seem to register the character of whoever is near him. He rests or laughs contentedly in the arms of his mother or Edward, yet breaks into tears around the homunculus Wrath, and his crying carries a distressing effect on the Homunculi in general.

His existence traces back to the military's assault on Reole, where Rose was shielding children before soldiers abducted and violated her, leaving her pregnant. He is born offscreen and appears near the series' end. When Lyra is unmasked as Dante, she seizes the infant and uses a circle drawn on his stomach to open the Gate, later threatening to feed him to an alchemically conjured rock-dragon before Edward rescues him and returns him to Rose. The finale shows him a few months older in Resembool, able to laugh and hold his own bottle.

In Conqueror of Shamballa he is back in Reole as a small boy, and Rose rushes to shield him when the Thule Society's armored soldiers attack; by then she is also raising a young girl and another boy, presumably orphans she has taken in.
