Personality

Once a greedy schemer, Yoki settles into the part of the story's comic relief after falling in with Scar. He is forever trying to pass himself off as the one in charge, telling strangers that Scar is his servant, yet he obeys the fugitive's every word and even calls him master. His posturing routinely lands him in pain and humiliation, though a stubborn hunger to matter now and then pushes him into real bravery, as when he rams Pride with a car simply because everyone else keeps getting the heroic moments.

History

In the manga and 2009 anime, Yoki lords over Youswell as a corrupt officer, crushing its residents under punishing taxes until the Elric brothers con him out of the town in 1914 and report his misconduct. Stripped of rank, he sinks into homelessness on the outskirts of Central, failing at one trade and gamble after another. The 2009 series folds in an original detour where he breaks into the Armstrong estate, becomes smitten with Catherine Elle Armstrong at her piano, and is thrown out along with the instrument, only to stumble onto the outlaw Scar. Forced to serve Scar on pain of death, he trails the country at his side and, after the fighting ends, turns up years later as a circus performer beside Heinkel and Darius.

The 2003 anime keeps his early story largely the same, adding that he recruits an alchemist named Lyra to enforce his rule. He later tips the military off to Scar's location, gambling that the arrest will earn his reinstatement, but Lust kills him during the raid, a death that nearly sparks a clash between soldiers and Ishvalans until Roy Mustang cools it with a show of flame alchemy. The Elric brothers afterward identify Lust as the killer from the stab wounds visible in photographs, clearing the Ishvalans of any blame.
