Episode 58 (2009 Anime)

With Ed dragged off through a portal that resembles the Gate of Truth, the Gold-Toothed Doctor promises Mustang the same fate awaits him. Tremors ripple across Central as the giant array keeps working. At the outer wall, a shattering blow sends Wrath and Greed tumbling over the ledge, and Lan Fan arrives just in time to seize Greed's arm. Greed warns her that her automail cannot bear the combined weight and urges her toward Fu, but she answers, weeping, that her grandfather is already gone. A Briggs rifleman fires, and the bullet in Wrath's shoulder loosens his grip and drops him into the moat below.

Reverted to Ling, the prince begs for an alchemically skilled doctor to save Fu with Greed's stone, but no one can answer him. The dying Buccaneer asks Ling to defend the main gate and hold it shut until Olivier gives the word, then salutes and passes with Falman returning the gesture.

Borrowing Greed's power and leaving Lan Fan to guard the wounded, Ling takes an elevator down and unleashes a strike that blows it apart, then fights off the Central troops beyond the gate under a full Ultimate Shield transformation. Olivier learns from her men that Buccaneer and several soldiers have died wounding Bradley, and that Greed has openly sided with them, news the captive Edison refuses to believe of any homunculus loyal to Father. Elsewhere, Ed and Izumi wake in a strange room where Al soon appears, and Father arrives with Hohenheim sealed inside him, remarking they are one sacrifice short. Hohenheim is absorbed before he can say much, and Ed finds Al will not stir.

Meanwhile the remnants of Ed's group are pinned: Hawkeye's gun jams, Mustang's gloves are slashed, and Scar is held at swordpoint. The doctor pushes Mustang to perform Human Transmutation and revive a loved one such as Maes Hughes, but Mustang, knowing the dead cannot truly return, refuses. Out of patience, the doctor has a zombie soldier mortally wound Hawkeye and dangles her survival as the price of compliance. Despite her protests, Mustang decides to give in.

The episode adapts the manga chapters "Holding the Gate" and "The Fifth Human Sacrifice." Small changes appear throughout: Wrath's thrown sword fragment stabs a Briggs soldier's arm here rather than his leg, and Ling tears a two-sleeved shirt into his familiar sleeveless look for added drama. Because the prior episode had Izumi brief Olivier on the Gate, a minor continuity slip carries over from the manga when Olivier still asks what the Gate is, present in both the Japanese and English tracks. A woman resembling Dante also appears alongside an older man discussing events in Central, and Captain Buccaneer is given a silent title card.
