Chapter 98: Greed Without Limits

Wrath tells his brother he would have been smarter to run, but Greed answers that fleeing was never on the table, since his bottomless hunger now craves Wrath's life as well. Overhearing Central troops, Lan Fan learns of Bradley's comeback and the fight raging at the front gate. Greed drops down and asks how the Führer survived the train bombing; Bradley credits his Ultimate Eye for charting a safe path out in the instant of the blast, admitting his age slowed him a little. Falman approaches and recognizes Ling, who speaks up from within Greed to thank him for past kindness before yielding control back and sheathing his arms in the Ultimate Shield, calling this fight a personal one. The two homunculi collide, and Greed keeps pace by circling into the eyepatch blind spot Ling taught him to exploit, until Bradley tears the patch away and bares the Ultimate Eye, forcing Greed onto the defensive.

Briggs troops fire on Bradley's back against Greed's warning, and the Führer dodges every shot and cuts several of them down, goading Buccaneer into a charge. Wrath runs the captain through the gut, but Buccaneer clamps the blade with his abdominal muscles and lands a blow that leaves Bradley weaponless, prompting the Führer to snatch two daggers from a dead soldier and block Greed's attack. Outside, a fresh Central wave under Officer Storch arrives to retake the gate, only for a lone assailant to sever their communications, blind them with smoke, and drop them one by one before revealing himself as Fu, who has finally tracked Greed's foul aura and now burns with fury on learning this is the man who took his granddaughter's arm. At Radio Capital, the rebels scramble to adjust when word spreads that the Führer is battling Briggs men, and Denny Brosh arrives as a trusted negotiator. Inside headquarters, Izumi and Olivier wring a confession from Edison, who reveals the plan to sacrifice all of Amestris through a nationwide transmutation circle for immortality and world rule, and that the Führer was made only to serve it. Izumi urges the listening Central soldiers to abandon their commanders, and many cast off their badges to join Briggs. Down in the tunnels, Mustang, Edward, Hawkeye, and Scar come upon a strange old man with a gold tooth who muses that the passages are filling up and the final act is about to begin.

The chapter runs in volume 24 as part of the Promised Day Arc. It debuted in Japan on August 12, 2009, and VIZ Media released the English edition on January 18, 2011. The events here were spread across several episodes of the 2009 Brotherhood anime series, including its coverage of the adults' resolve, the Führer's return, and the descent beneath Central.
