Katō voiced Father Cornello in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the corrupt self-proclaimed prophet who rules over the town of Liore through a fraudulent miracle powered by alchemy. The character had been voiced by a different actor in the original 2003 series, and Katō's version arrived when Brotherhood retold the story faithfully to Hiromu Arakawa's manga starting in 2009. He was in his early eighties at the time, one of many veteran performers Brotherhood brought in for its supporting cast.

Katō spent decades as a member of the Haikyo actors' cooperative in Tokyo, and outside anime he is best remembered internationally as the Japanese voice of Megatron and Galvatron across the original Transformers series through Transformers: The Headmasters. He also stepped in to loop dialogue for actor Takeshi Katō's role in Akira Kurosawa's Ran after Takeshi was injured during filming. He died of bladder cancer in Tokyo in January 2014 at age 86.
