Kaori Kawashima

No conventional physical description of Kaori survives in the source material. What defines her look is entirely borrowed: she submits to prosthetic surgery until her features become an exact copy of Pazu, the man she cannot let go. By the time the two meet face to face, a pair of identical bodies stands opposite one another, and even Section 9 struggles to say which of them holds which mind.

A single relationship consumes her entire arc. After a brief affair ended and Pazu vanished from her life, Kaori did not move on but instead spiraled into fixation. Her longing hardens into something close to derangement, a compulsion to fuse her identity with his. Anyone who might block that goal becomes expendable, and she removes them one at a time until only Pazu remains between her and the union she craves.

Through a craftsman who sculpts prosthetic faces, Pazu stumbles into the woman he had discarded. Kaori had searched for him without success, since his career as a dirty officer left almost no trail to follow. Her scheme matures from mere pursuit into replacement: kill Pazu, then live as him.

Understanding how personal the matter is, Pazu wins the Major's permission to work the case by himself. He agrees to meet her, but their talk collapses into violence, and the two trade knife strikes. One of the identical men takes a blade through the eye and dies, though the story deliberately leaves open which of them walked away.
