Motoko Kusanagi

As a fully synthetic being she has worn many faces, since each manga, film, and series reimagines her body to suit its own story. Her recurring look pairs high boots with a strapless leotard and a leather jacket, traded out for a tan officer's uniform or a form-fitting gray combat suit when the mission calls for it. The frame she inhabits ranks among the most sophisticated on the market, its skin packed with tactile sensors that grant her a sense of touch far keener than any natural one. She is also heavy enough that a failure of her buoyancy gear would drop her like a stone, a hazard she shrugs off to go diving alone for relaxation.

Her temperament shifts with the telling. The manga gives her a brash, playful, openly sexual streak, needling her superior and trading jabs with her squad, while the Oshii films strip that away for a withdrawn, near-emotionless commander lost in thought. Across every version she leads from the front, a lone wolf who leans on no one, yet she is drawn again and again to the same unanswerable question: whether the ghost inside her artificial shell holds any real humanity, or whether her memories were simply written to convince her she was once flesh. She prizes variety over sameness, deliberately recruiting the barely-modified Togusa so the team never turns uniform, and she treats sexism in any form with open contempt.

She earns the rank of major serving in the Ground Self Defense Force before taking charge of Section 9's field team. In the original film she hunts the rogue intelligence known as the Puppet Master and ultimately fuses with it to become something new, a merger whose lingering fragment resurfaces to aid Batou in Innocence. The Stand Alone Complex arc turns on the Laughing Man case, during which she comes to respect the sentient Tachikoma tanks she once wanted decommissioned, survives being hunted and seemingly killed after Section 9 is disbanded, and sees the unit restored. The second season pits her against the schemer Kazundo Gouda and the Individual Eleven, and it ties her fate to the refugee leader Hideo Kuze, whom she is sent to capture on Dejima. There she learns the two of them shared a childhood: a plane crash left her body broken at around six years old and forced her into full cyberization, and Kuze was the boy who survived alongside her. Her pursuit of Gouda ends with her gunning him down in an elevator, though she cannot stop Kuze's assassination. The live-action film reworks her origin once more, opening with her as Mira Killian, a supposed refugee survivor built by Hanka Robotics, before she recovers her buried identity as Kusanagi and reunites with the mother taken from her.
