Cyberization is the procedure that fuses a natural brain with electronic hardware to produce an upgraded organ known as a cyberbrain, written in Japanese as denno and read loosely as electricity brain. The series coined both terms. Paired with micromachines, the implant lets the brain open and hold a live tie to computer networks and to other people who carry one, giving a constant, direct route to the Net with no external gear required.
The upgrade pushes neural performance past ordinary biological limits in areas like motor control and data handling. A person need not convert the whole body: the brain alone can be cyberized while the rest stays organic. Consciousness can later be shifted into a fresh cyberbrain as circumstances demand, and matched with a full cyborg frame it can stretch a lifespan many times over. Physically the organ gains a thin metal casing for strength, the shell that lends the franchise its name. These sweeping changes also breed strange social effects, among them the phenomenon called Stand Alone Complex, and they feed the series' running debate over transhumanism and whether a mind reduced to copyable data still holds any real identity.
Underneath, a cyberbrain behaves much like the organic version, firing electrical signals along a tangle of internal wiring that stands in for nerves. The franchise sets out three grades of the procedure. The lightest and most common is minimal cyberization, which leaves the cerebrum and corpus callosum largely alone and instead weaves micromachine electronics into the cerebellum. Some of that biocircuitry naturally sloughs off during insertion, no less than a quarter of it, a side effect of the molecular forces the machines use to work into the tissue. What settles in links to a broader microcircuit that outputs through ports below the cerebellum called Fort Plugs, while later models add wideband wireless for reaching the pervasive Net.
Advanced cyberization swaps out or upgrades far more of the brain, holding a floor of roughly twenty percent living tissue so the ghost survives. Users at this level can steer more than one cyborg body at once, learn at accelerated rates, and run computation ordinary people cannot. Extreme cyberization is rarer still and usually forced by illness, pushing replacement as high as 97.5 percent. Those who go this far tend to drift from normal humanity in how fluently they interface with machines, yet paradoxically feel emotion more sharply, since so little tissue is left to blunt it. Every cyberbrain, whatever the grade, wears a customized shell with openings for the optic nerves and the olfactory bulb, and shielding such as lead and glass can be added for work in radioactive settings.
In the world of Stand Alone Complex, cyberbrains are about as common as phones are today, which spreads their vulnerabilities widely. The chief danger is intrusion: a hacker can rewrite memories or falsify what a person senses, as in the Laughing Man affair, where an entire crowd's vision was doctored so the culprit could slip away. Users whose brains prove too compatible with the tech can fall into Closed Shell Syndrome, a cyberbrain-driven form of autism distinct from ordinary autistic mode; sufferers withdraw from the world but often become savants prized for raising and tearing down network barriers.
The technology also carries a fatal disease, cyberbrain sclerosis, in which the tissue hardens as a consequence of cyberization. It has no accepted cure and puts anyone with a cyberbrain at some risk, however slim the odds. A central thread of Stand Alone Complex follows the burying of the Murai Vaccine, which cured the condition yet by a mechanism no one could pin down, in favor of more marketable micromachine research; that research produced lucrative spinoffs but never a cure, and the official who blocked the vaccine turned out to be dying of the very illness and staying alive on the treatment he suppressed. As a further safeguard, some cyberbrains raise an Attack Wall, a barrier that normally jolts an intruder back out of the net and, at full strength, can short-circuit and kill all but the most elite hackers.
