Darry Adai

Childhood Darry is small, with blue eyes beneath hair of a soft pink. The timeskip carries her to average teenage height, her hair settling into a deeper pink, and she adopts her unit's red and white uniform.

Shyness defines the young Darry. She hardly speaks, hangs back where her impulsive twin charges ahead, and keeps a plush doll clutched close at all times. The older Darry has traded that reserve for quiet confidence, though Gimmy still out-talks her. Between the two she is the thinker: calm, watchful, and deliberate, weighing her moves where her brother simply acts.

Darry is born in Adai Village as Gimmy's younger twin. Their parents never appear, most likely exiled, leaving the pair orphans under Rossiu's care. When Team Gurren crashes into the village, the twins are selected for banishment to the surface, and Rossiu chooses to go with them; the team takes all three in, the children riding in Gurren's rear holder on the road. They cheer Simon off to the Dai-Gunzan raid, spend most of the first arc as comic relief, and wave to the triumphant Gurren Lagann when Teppelin falls.

After the timeskip both twins fly Grapearls. When Viral fires on Gimmy in battle, Darry saves her brother, and together they bring Viral down and haul him to jail. That night a Mugann attack overwhelms them until Simon destroys the creature, at heavy cost to the city. Once Leeron devises weapons that can safely kill the Mugann, the twins cover the capital's evacuation and fight in the first space engagement. Simon later hands them the controls of Arc Gurren-Lagann so he can halt the Chouginga Dai-Gurren. In the final push beyond Earth, an Anti-Spiral wave shoots Darry down; Gimmy pulls her out, and moments later Jorgun and Balinbow die shielding the two of them.

The epilogue finds the twins twenty years on, commanding the Grapearl squadron and piloting Gurren Lagann as its new crew. Her name derives from hidari, the Japanese word for left, and in the original ADV dub plans Hilary Haag was slated for the role.
