Appearance

Orange hair marks Gimmy in both halves of the story, though its shape changes with him. As a child it hangs flat and low around his face, one stray lock dangling between his eyes; a brown cloak worn like a cape covers a black undershirt, blue shorts, and brown shoes. After the time skip he spikes the hair upward, keeping only that center lock from the old cut, and lives in the Grapearl Squadron uniform, setting it aside just once for Simon's wedding.

Personality

Of the two twins, Gimmy is the bold one, impulsive and outgoing where his sister holds back, and his recklessness sometimes lands the pair in trouble. Through the first arc he is almost never seen without his usual cheer. Adulthood matures him enough to earn his own Grapearl, but the second war tests him hard: losing teammates, above all Jorgun and Balinbow, visibly shakes him, and fear pins him in place when the flagship sits trapped in a pocket of ultra-dense space while Kittan and Yoko sortie without him. He also carries a naive faith that Simon's colossal Spiral Power could simply raise the dead, and asks why his leader accepts their losses instead. The understanding he reaches after Yoko and Simon explain is part of what proves him worthy of the Lagann.

History

Gimmy and his twin sister Darry are parentless children of Adai Village, looked after by Rossiu. When newborns push the village past its fifty-person limit, the elder picks the orphaned twins for removal to the surface, and Rossiu insists on going with them. Team Gurren, having crashed into the village, takes all three aboard, and the children ride out the first war in Gurren's rear compartment, cheering Simon toward the Dai-Gunzan and waving to the victorious Gurren Lagann at Teppelin.

Seven years later both twins fly Grapearls. Darry saves Gimmy from Viral's fire, and together they bring him in; that same night a Mugan attack overwhelms them until Simon destroys the creature at heavy cost to the city. The pair guard the evacuation once Leeron devises weapons that work against the Mugan, fight in the first space battle, and take over the controls of Arc-Gurren Lagann, freeing Simon to halt the Chouginga Dai-Gurren. Deep in the war against the Anti-Spirals, Darry detonates a missile to save the fleet and is shot down; Gimmy retrieves her, and Jorgun and Balinbow give their lives covering the escape. When a grieving Gimmy asks Kittan how anyone keeps fighting through so much death, Kittan snaps back that the twins were saved because their comrades believed in them. After Nia's passing, Simon hands the Core Drill to Gimmy, and the epilogue finds the twins twenty years on, commanding the Grapearl squadron and piloting Gurren Lagann together. His name plays on migi, the Japanese word for the right side.
