Who Do You Think You Are, Having Two Faces!?

Counting on the beastmen's habit of attacking only by day, Yoko leads Kamina and Simon on a hunt and demonstrates that her rifle fires arrows as well as bullets. Kamina brings down a flying creature, finds a second arrow already lodged in it, and comes face to face with its owner: the beastman Viral. Their sword duel tilts against Kamina until he improvises, snatching an arrow and driving it into Viral's face, and Simon crashes in with the Lagann to break things up. Both fighters race for their machines, but Viral's Enki overwhelms the pair completely and nearly finishes them with a laser; only the setting sun saves them, as Viral notes the hour and withdraws to base.

He is back the next day, and Kamina stands waiting. Dayakka's defenders rush to assist and are nearly wiped out before doing any damage; Kamina takes a beating shielding them, while Simon sits frozen with fear until Yoko's words push him to move. His surprise strike rescues Kamina, who then tries to force Gurren onto Lagann and fails outright. When Viral presses the attack, the two machines merge for real, forming the towering Gurren Lagann, which batters Enki into retreat.

That evening, Kamina and Simon commit to tracking down the beastmen's base. Yoko and Leeron choose to come along, and Kamina claims his father's cape before the little band sets out.

Viral debuts as the series' recurring beastman adversary, clashing with Kamina in both swordplay and Gunmen combat.

Lagann and Gurren combine for the first time, creating the Gurren Lagann and stripping Enki of its helmet in their opening bout.

The Japanese title, Kao ga Futatsu tā Namaiki na!!, matches the English broadcast title Who Do You Think You Are, Having Two Faces!?. The Japanese premiere came on April 15, 2007, with the English airing on August 4, 2008, between Episode 2 and Episode 4.

The manga plays the first combination as a gag in which the drill runs Kamina through and kills him.
