Overview

The Human Eradication Army is the Beastman military that the Spiral King Lordgenome created and ran through his Four Supreme Generals; it serves as the principal antagonist force across the anime's first half. Headquartered in the capital of Teppelin, its soldiers are Beastmen piloting Gunmen, machines originally engineered for war against the Anti-Spiral. The army is split into four divisions, one under each Supreme General, and every division patrols its own sector of the planet, wiping out humans who emerge above ground.

Role

The army exists because of a threat far larger than humanity. When the Spiral War closed with the Anti-Spiral triumphant, an extermination system was placed over Earth, primed to annihilate all life on the planet should the human population ever hit one million. To keep that trigger from being pulled, Lordgenome betrayed his former comrades, drove mankind underground, and engineered the Beastmen, a race incapable of producing Spiral Energy, to police the surface in his name.

That order eventually collapses. A resistance known as Team Dai-Gurren, founded by Kamina and later headed by his little bro Simon, wages war on the army all the way to Teppelin, where Simon kills Lordgenome and ends the conflict, opening the surface to humanity once more. With the Spiral King and the Four Supreme Generals dead, the organization dissolves. Scattered Beastman warlords from its ranks keep raiding human settlements for a time, but the New Government's Grapearl squadrons eliminate most of them.
