Overview

Lagann is Simon's own Gunman, and once it joins with Gurren it forms one half of Gurren Lagann. Simon digs it out of the earth in the opening episode while tunneling beneath his village. Kamina hands it its name, which means enveloping face, and it runs on the Core Drill, a little golden bit that Simon twists like an ignition key.

Function

Two abilities define it. The Lagann Impact rams the target with its drills and usually folds in the machine's signature trick of assimilation. That trick, called Gunman Fusionism, lets Lagann seize and override any Gunmen it bores into; the classic case is boring into Gurren to yield Gurren Lagann, but it works on larger prey too, such as the Dai-Gunzan. As with everything Lagann does, the effect scales with how strong the pilot's will is.

Notable Users

Simon is the machine's main pilot, but he is not the first. Parallel Works episode 8 reveals that a young Lordgenome uncovered the earliest Laganns when the Anti-Spirals first struck Earth, ages before the story opens, and those units became the template for every Gunmen that follows. After he turned traitor, Lordgenome apparently wrecked them all save one, which lay buried far underground until Simon dug it up.

Over the series the cockpit passes to others as well, with Nia Teppelin and later Gimmy Adai taking the controls. It first appears in the premiere and stays active through the finale.
