Monica Rial

In the original, unfinished ADV Films dub of Gurren Lagann, Monica Rial voiced both Boota, the pig-like pet mascot, and Kiyoh Bachika. That production was recast before its eventual English release, so those two performances remain specific to the unreleased ADV version. She has worked in anime dubbing since 1999.

Monica Rial is an American voice actress and ADR scriptwriter with more than two decades of experience in English-language anime dubbing. Beyond voice performance, she writes ADR scripts, adapting Japanese dialogue into English lines for dubbing sessions. Her Gurren Lagann work came through ADV Films' original dub attempt.

Rial's performances as Boota and Kiyoh Bachika were recorded for ADV Films' original English dub of Gurren Lagann, but the production stalled after only a handful of episodes when the studio ran into financial trouble and lost the license. Bandai Entertainment later relicensed the series and recast most of the parts for the dub that eventually reached most English-speaking fans. Her original performances were never included in that officially released version.

Rial has worked across major English-dub studios, including Funimation and Crunchyroll, ADV Films and its successor Sentai Filmworks, and the US branch of Toei Animation. Her Gurren Lagann credits trace back to ADV Films specifically. She has built that studio range over more than two decades in the industry.
