Theresia

Theresia is a small girl with black hair who holds herself with a rigid quietness. Puck observes that her eyes carry a grave, weary look that seems far too aged for someone so young.

By temperament Theresia is soft-spoken and timid, a tender-hearted girl ground down by a life of confinement. Her father's suffocating watchfulness has left her longing for a freedom she has never tasted, and she pulls away from his touch, feeling that something within him has gone wrong without understanding that he is now an apostle and the killer of her mother. The night her father dies strips that innocence from her. Shattered by all she sees while the God Hand are summoned, she at first attempts to end her own life, then turns on Guts with icy loathing, blaming him for her ruin and vowing to see him dead.

Theresia arrives in the tale as the Count's daughter, taking Puck aback when the captured elf is presented to her as a toy. Distant and chilly toward her father yet shrinking from his touch, she reassures the terrified Puck that she intends him no harm, admitting that she too understands what it means to be caged. She retells the transformation that seized her father seven years before, pinning her mother's death on heretics and asking herself aloud whether he remains human. On learning she has not stepped beyond her room since her mother died, Puck vows to bring her outside, yet the clash between Guts and her father breaks her door open before he can.

Stumbling into the fight, she is seized by Guts and used as a shield to maim her apostle father, sobbing as he is savaged. When the God Hand appear and press to offer her as a sacrifice, Ubik compels her to witness the truth of her mother's end. Unable to surrender her, the Count is hauled into the Abyss, and she is left weeping over his human remains. Provoked by an unfeeling Guts, she nearly flings herself from a cliff, only for Puck to step in and Guts to draw her back to safety. She damns him for wrecking her life and swears vengeance, and he coolly tells her she now holds a reason to go on living, hiding the grief beneath.
