Kanō

Kanō wears the standard shihakushō with his Zanpakutō fixed at his waist. He has a long face set with small black eyes and blue eyebrows, and his blue hair rises and sweeps back into spikes away from his face.

Calmer and more level-headed than the rest of the 3rd Division, Kanō raises no protest when Amagai is named their captain. As the squad's skills sharpen, though, his confidence swells, and he too comes to defy a senior officer out of a wish to lift the division's prestige, even if he first urges his comrades to wait for Amagai's return.

Kanō attends the stiff welcome party for Amagai and soon joins the division on a mission into the Dangai to wipe out a group of Menos Grande, felling one of the first enemies the squad brings down before the deadly Kōtotsu forces a retreat that Amagai halts single-handed. In the days that follow he helps recover a noble's lost cat and takes part in Amagai's coordination drills, tying on a colored ribbon like the others. Frustrated that the division is still saddled with menial chores for other squads, he sides with the 3rd Seat Makoto Kibune, marching into battle against fresh Menos over Izuru Kira's objections, then puts Amagai's training to use helping Rangiku Matsumoto and the 10th Division fight in step. Later, ordered to assist Kira, Kanō uncovers Kibune's treachery firsthand, is knocked senseless when Kibune turns his Zanpakutō on him, and afterward helps carry the wounded lieutenant to safety while relaying the plot to Amagai.
