Shūsuke Amagai

Amagai cuts a deliberately rumpled figure, his jaw shadowed with stubble and his blue-tinged hair hanging to his chin in an untidy tangle. Tall and powerfully built, he dresses in the usual black robes of a Shinigami topped by a full captain's haori, unlike the sleeveless coat his predecessor favored. He carries a second sheath at his hip and tucks a length of white cloth into the fold of his uniform.

In his public role Amagai comes across as approachable and good-humored, a decisive and charismatic leader who wins over even the wary Izuru Kira and stresses coordination and teamwork among his squad. He respects the law yet bends it when he believes the truth demands it, and a single cup of sake is enough to leave him unconscious, a weakness played for comedy. All of that warmth is a shell. His genuine self is calculating and cold-blooded, orchestrating the Kasumiōji affair with little regard for who gets hurt along the way. Two targets consume him: Yamamoto, whom he holds responsible for killing his father, and Rurichiyo Kasumiōji, guilty in his eyes merely for being born to the clan that built the Bakkōtō. He grows arrogant once armed with both his Bankai and his forbidden weapon, taunting foes and thinking himself untouchable, though he draws a line at those he deems innocent, telling Ichigo he would have spared a human who never interfered.

Born to Shin'etsu Kisaragi of the First Division, the future captain was still known by another name when he found his father dying, cut down by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, with a single strange word on his lips: Bakkōtō. Years later he enrolled in the Gotei 13 under the invented identity of Shūsuke Amagai, claiming humble Rukongai roots, and quietly dug into the truth. His research traced the Bakkōtō to the Kasumiōji Clan and convinced him that Yamamoto had silenced his father to bury the weapons' secret, so he devoted himself to vengeance. He earned the clan's confidence, accepted a Bakkōtō from Gyōkaku Kumoi, climbed the ranks of the Patrol Corps, and, once Gin Ichimaru defected, claimed the Third Division's captaincy by surviving a bout with Kenpachi Zaraki.

Installed as captain, Amagai steered the Kasumiōji crisis from the shadows, briefly siding with Ichigo Kurosaki before cutting down Kumoi and spiriting Rurichiyo away. He finally cornered Yamamoto and revealed his tuning-fork Bakkōtō, a weapon that severs a Shinigami from their spiritual power and cancels any Zanpakutō, then unleashed his flame Bankai, Raika Gōen Kaku. Ichigo blocked his path and shattered the Bakkōtō, and Yoruichi Shihōin laid bare the real history: his father had been a captured spy driven mad by a Bakkōtō and forced to attack his own side, leaving Yamamoto no choice but to end him. Crushed by the revelation and his father's warning to fear the weapon, Amagai chose to die in his own blade's fire, offering Izuru a quiet apology as he went.
