Tattoo is a rough Ogre Street thief who briefly crosses paths with Jonathan Joestar early in Phantom Blood. Named by Speedwagon for the bold mark across his face, he begins as a mugger before drifting, like his companions, onto the right side of the story.
Tattoo is a burly, weathered man sporting a short beard and a mess of untidy hair, usually dressed in a fringed leather jacket with matching pants and belt. The obvious source of his nickname is a broad marking that sweeps from one cheek to the other and climbs from his brow down to the bridge of his nose, resembling either a butterfly or an inkblot design.
A hardened member of the dangerous Ogre Street crowd, Tattoo tends to gang up on his targets alongside his fellow thieves and shows no hesitation about maiming anyone he robs, favoring a knife. Despite that violent streak, he reveals a softer, loyal side later on, fretting over Speedwagon's injuries and sticking with him once the trio leaves crime behind.
Little of Tattoo's past is recorded beyond his rowdy nature and his ties to Speedwagon, both men hailing from Ogre Street. He first appears among the muggers who corner Jonathan during the young man's search for a cure to his father's illness, lunging in with a knife only to freeze in disbelief when Jonathan catches the blade bare-handed. Later, after the battle at the mansion, he tags along to visit the recovering Jonathan in the hospital and urges Speedwagon to rest, and by the close of Part 1 he stands among the crowd seeing Jonathan and Erina off on their voyage to America.
