Jonathan Joestar

Standing an imposing 195 centimeters, Jonathan is a strikingly handsome and heavily muscled young man who carries himself with a gentleman's bearing. His wardrobe reflects his noble upbringing, favoring stylized tunics worn over long-sleeved shirts and accented with a cravat or a bowtie, a vest, and sturdy boots. Though the original Phantom Blood manga omits it, later adaptations give him the Joestar star birthmark.

His attire shifts with the demands of his journey, from semi-formal jackets and university rugby kit to the padded coat, deerstalker cap, and long cloak he dons while searching the slums of Ogre Street, and the fitted tank tops he takes to once his Ripple training begins.

As a child Jonathan was proud and a touch mischievous but fundamentally gentle, already dreaming of becoming a true gentleman even before he had the manners to match. Motherless and shunned by other boys over his status, he grew up somewhat lonely, and the cruelty of his adopted brother Dio ironically forged his strength of will. Above all he prizes honor, carrying the Joestar name with pride and treating every person with respect until they prove themselves wicked.

Beneath his courtesy runs a fierce resolve Dio calls an explosive power, a refusal to back down once he is committed, shown when he seizes a mugger's blade barehanded rather than yield. He is compassionate almost to a fault, weighing the pain his actions cause even his enemies, feeling sorrow as he strikes down foes, and still shedding tears for Dio despite everything. His lifelong impulse is to protect others, from rescuing the young Erina to worrying over a stranger's baby in his final moments.

Jonathan's life is bound to tragedy from infancy, when a carriage accident kills his mother and, through a misunderstood debt, brings the scheming Dio Brando into the Joestar household. Twelve years on, the boy who once leapt to defend a bullied girl named Erina finds his home turned into a slow torment as Dio works to crush his spirit. After Dio steals Erina's first kiss, Jonathan overpowers him in a furious brawl, but soon loses his beloved dog Danny to Dio's cruelty.

Years later, with his father George mysteriously ailing, Jonathan uncovers proof that Dio has been poisoning him and ventures into the slums of Ogre Street, where he wins the loyalty of the thug Robert E. O. Speedwagon and secures an antidote. Cornered, Dio dons the Stone Mask and becomes a vampire, murdering George, and Jonathan is forced to burn down his own home to stop him. He then trains under the Ripple master Will Anthonio Zeppeli, learning to channel sunlight energy and cutting his way through Dio's undead knights, though Zeppeli sacrifices his life to pass on his power.

Jonathan finally casts Dio from a balcony and shatters the Stone Mask, and at last marries Erina. Their honeymoon voyage turns fatal when a headless, surviving Dio ambushes him and pierces his throat. Mortally wounded, Jonathan uses his last strength to wreck the ship and end Dio, begging Erina to flee with a rescued infant. He dies at peace with his enemy in his arms, and the Joestar bloodline endures through Erina and their unborn son.
