Destiny's Bargain

Destiny's Bargain covers the return of Mark, Nolan, and Tech Jacket to Earth once they suspect the last Viltrumites have fled to the distant world. The event bridges the close of the Viltrumite War and the beginning of the Great Resurgence, the covert migration of the surviving Viltrumites into human society and the seed of the later Tragic Scourge.

Mark wakes aboard the returning ship from a brutal nightmare of Thragg's army leveling a city, frozen by post-traumatic stress. Reaching Earth, he flies down alone and finds his hometown calm, with no sign of invasion, and Nolan and Tech Jacket confirm the planet is untouched. At the Grayson house, Debbie greets him tearfully, but a hallucination of Thragg killing her forces Mark to hide his terror as he explains Oliver's injuries. Nolan stays to face Debbie, who refuses to forgive him yet sends him away less harshly than before. Mark then reunites with Eve, who had believed him dead; their emotional reunion turns devastating when she confesses she was pregnant before he left for space and chose to have an abortion in his absence, a loss they grieve together. Throughout, Mark suffers repeated waking nightmares of his loved ones being slaughtered, making clear he cannot slip back into ordinary life. Elsewhere, Cecil confronts Nolan at the mountainside where he nearly beat Mark to death, coldly ordering him off Earth and telling him he must nearly die 2,341 more times, once for each Chicago casualty, before any reconciliation. Nolan later carries a still-furious Debbie into orbit to join Oliver on Talescria after a cosmic alert system is installed to detect Viltrumite activity. During a G.D.A. debriefing, Mark's worst panic attack yet breaks him, and he begs Cecil for a therapist.

Unable to sleep and consumed by guilt, Mark confides to Eve that they did not truly win; they merely destroyed Viltrum and left its strongest survivors with nothing to lose. She urges him to take a calming flight, and high in the atmosphere he encounters Thragg hovering silently. Certain it is another hallucination, Mark shuts his eyes, but Thragg remains and confirms the Viltrumites are already on Earth. Thragg lays out his ultimatum: only thirty-seven Viltrumites survive, yet that is enough to shatter the planet, and they intend to live disguised among humans to interbreed and secretly rebuild their empire. Any interference by Mark or the Coalition would doom billions, while compliance buys total neutrality. Exhausted and placing his family's safety above justice, Mark reluctantly accepts the truce. Thragg notes the irony of Mark serving as the empire's savior, promises he will never be heard from again, and flies away, ending the war and beginning the Viltrumites' hidden resurgence.
