Great Resurgence

The Great Resurgence is the covert Viltrumite resettlement in which the surviving members of the race establish themselves on Earth with a single aim: to blend into human society and interbreed, gradually restoring their critically endangered species. It signals the closing stretch of the Thragg Era, the empire's age of expansion.

After their defeat in the Viltrumite War, the last thirty-six Viltrumites withdrew to Earth aboard their final cruiser, meaning to rebuild their numbers unnoticed among humanity. The choice rested on the discovery that human DNA could yield near-perfect hybrids all but indistinguishable from pure Viltrumites. Arriving after weeks of travel, they concealed the cruiser on the far side of the moon and scattered across the planet to slip into human life, while Thragg stayed aboard to oversee the empire's slow revival. Sometime after Nolan and Debbie left for Talescria, Mark encountered Thragg, who delivered an ultimatum: the Viltrumites would integrate and reproduce in secret, harming no one so long as they were left alone, and any attempt to expose or remove them would kill billions and doom the survivors. With no real alternative, Mark accepted, and the refugees remained hidden among humanity as they worked to restore their population.

The event is framed as the mirror image of the Great Purge, trading a time of culling and consolidation for one of repopulation and, later, reform. Among the thirty-six who settled on Earth, Kregg is the first to find a compatible human mate, an early sign that life among humans would begin to reshape the Viltrumites much as it once changed Nolan. Their advanced technology kept the Global Defense Agency unaware of their presence until a later clash between the Coalition and the empire finally brought the truth to light.
