This Was Supposed To Be Easy

The fifth chapter of the third season opens on a savage escape. Locked inside Payton Penitentiary, Multi-Paul floods his cell with copies until the sheer press of bodies cracks the glass, though the effort leaves most of the duplicates crushed. A guard shuts him down with a collar that chokes off his cloning. When Dupli-Kate visits, their reunion sours into an argument over guilt and the extra sentence he now faces. A memory surfaces of the twins as children, whose uncontrolled powers so strained their father that he died of an aneurysm, orphaning them into a life of government experiments that eventually pushed Paul to become a killer for The Order.

At home, Mark and Eve weather an awkward breakfast after Oliver blurts out a cover story for their night together. Feeling crowded, Mark floats moving out, and Eve solves the money problem by launching a paid hero service called Invincible Inc., which quickly lands them a contract guarding a super-prison. Debbie also confides that Oliver keeps slipping out at night; trailing him, Mark watches his little brother defuse a pack of bullies by using Viltrumite speed to yank their pants down rather than throw a punch. Rex, on his own track, cooks a romantic meal for Shrinking Rae and slightly fumbles it by misspelling her name.

In Chicago, Mr. Liu leans on Titan to spring Multi-Paul, threatening his family. Cornered, Titan quietly cuts a deal with the jailed Machine Head: freedom in exchange for killing Liu and sparing Titan and his territory from The Order's control. Titan then gives Mark a tour of his district to argue that his nonviolent rule has genuinely helped the neighborhood, hoping to justify the jailbreak as the lesser evil. Mark refuses and tries to arrest him, so Titan flees. When Liu realizes Multi-Paul is still caged, he erupts into a colossal fire dragon and storms the penitentiary.

Honoring their contract, Mark and Eve meet the dragon there, and the clash tears the walls open, sparking a full riot. Multi-Paul overloads his collar to birth a swarm of clones, bleeding from the strain, and slips one duplicate past Eve to vanish into the night. Isotope's staged betrayal keeps Liu distracted long enough for the freed Machine Head to arrive and execute Liu's fragile human body, ending the dragon and claiming leadership of The Order. Machine Head keeps his word, letting Titan walk with Chicago intact. Drained by the ordeal and their finances, Mark and Eve shelve the apartment plan, to Debbie's delight. A closing scene undercuts the win: a surviving servant revives Liu by feeding a fresh mystical dragon into his metal jaw.

The episode's title echoes a line Titan shouts in issue 53 of the comic, where Invincible foils his bid to free Multi-Paul from that same prison. It marks the launch of Invincible Inc., born from the couple's need for rent money and a place of their own. Six previously unseen Order members debut, alongside a new villainous take on War Woman's former partner, Connie.

Liu taunts Mark with "You're already dead," the catchphrase of Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, prompting Mark to answer with a rapid barrage of punches that nods to the same series. The boy who once accidentally fired a shotgun at Titan back in the first season returns here as one of Oliver's tormentors, and one of Oliver's skating friends is voiced by Robert Kirkman's daughter.
