Where I Really Come From

The first season's finale picks up over Immortal's severed body as Mark grasps that Nolan truly killed the Guardians. Nolan tries to explain and, when Mark lashes out, reveals he acted entirely of his own will. He then lays out the truth: Viltrumites are a conquering species that culled their own weak to grow strong before spreading across the stars, sparing worlds that submit and destroying those that resist. Nolan was sent to soften Earth for takeover and waited for Mark's powers to emerge before advancing the plan.

Mark cannot stomach his father's coldness, especially the claim that he loves Debbie only as a pet. He vows to defend Earth, and the two come to blows. Nolan dominates from the start, and as Cecil broadcasts the fight to Debbie and the new Guardians, he scrambles jets to buy Mark a few seconds. Nolan destroys them and crushes a pilot Mark had just rescued, driving home how futile the boy's compassion is.

Nolan turns the battle into a lesson in cruelty, punching Mark through a city block and forcing him to watch buildings collapse on the people he tries to save. He drags him into a subway and holds him in the path of an oncoming train, then hurls him underwater and into a mountainside, triggering an avalanche that buries a village. Beating his son toward death, Nolan finally rears back for the killing blow and hesitates, struck by a memory of cheering Mark at a childhood baseball game.

Unable to finish it, Nolan screams at Mark to understand, asking what he will have in five hundred years once every human he knows is gone. Mark's quiet answer, that he would still have his father, breaks him. Horrified at his own bloodied hands, Nolan flies off the planet entirely, weeping as he leaves a single tear drifting in space.

In the aftermath, Mark spends weeks recovering in GDA care while Cecil offers to fake Nolan's death to protect the family. The new Guardians, worn out from saving lives against orders, finally feel they have earned the right to scrub away the last bloodstain from their predecessors' murder, and they clean it together. Cecil shows Mark a hidden GDA lab and asks him to return as Invincible, though the boy remains hesitant.

The episode closes with Allen the Alien arriving to warn that a Viltrumite lives on Earth, only to learn Mark already knows. Allen finds Nolan's desertion baffling for their kind and floats the idea of Mark joining the Coalition's coming rebellion. A montage sets up future threats, from the Sequids taking Mars and the Flaxans plotting revenge to Doc Seismic's survival and Titan's rise. The title quotes an Omni-Man line from issue 11, and the scene of Nolan berating his son spawned the widely shared "Think, Mark!" meme.
