A crescent shaped clip is fixed in her hair at all times, a keepsake handed down from her late mother, who worked as an astronomer.

Care for other people's minds shapes her whole career. Her father died in the Second Impact, and watching depression swallow her mother afterward convinced Hitomi to help those caught in the same darkness. She blames herself in part, saying her mother's death, whatever its direct cause, came from a heart whose emptiness she could never fill after her father was gone. That unresolved guilt is what steered her into counseling work at NERV.

The first season of Evangelion Battlefields introduces her as an operator overseeing the Battlefields System, a virtual reality arena the pilots enter for combat practice, while she simultaneously tends to the mental health of staff and children alike. In the Case:02 storyline, an alternate universe unfolding in the same period as Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, she and Kotone Suzunami remain with NERV; there Hitomi bridges communication between pilots and commanders, raising matters with Kōzō Fuyutsuki whenever she feels the children's needs go unmet. The Case:03 universe instead places her with WILLE. Her father had been a researcher in a field never specified. Mai Nakahara voices her, and her surname borrows from the Amagi, a battlecruiser class of Japan's Imperial Navy that also named an Unryū class aircraft carrier. She is the second extra-canonical character to carry the given name Hitomi, after Hitomi Kaga of Secret of Evangelion.
