Spear of Gaius

Alone among the saga's spears, Gaius is a human creation. Misato Katsuragi and the AAA Wunder's crew conceive it in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time as a vessel of human will, completing a symbolic trio with Longinus, the spear of despair, and Cassius, the spear of hope. Its name follows the pattern of its siblings, borrowed from Gaius Cassius Longinus, the Roman conspirator against Julius Caesar whose name in turn echoes the centurion of Christian legend.

Its transformed state happens to resemble the Bracelet Lancer from Ultraman Taro, and a deleted scene preserved in the Rebuild of EVANGELION: 3.0+1.11 making-of video shows the spear destroying kanji from the film's script.

Nothing about the spear's shape is fixed; it shifts in both size and form, with two configurations shown on screen. As first formed, it divides into three parts around a glowing yellow core shaped like a needle running tip to base. Two mirrored halves wrap that core, one red like the older spears and one a muted blue, each carrying a long point and a winged flare, their strands twining in the family's double-helix motif so that red, blue, and yellow stripe across the whole weapon.

Once used, it simplifies radically. The ornamentation falls away, leaving a fully symmetrical needle with the yellow core at its center, red and blue bands interlocking toward both points and forming a loop on either side where they cross the middle.

With the last two ancestral spears destroyed, Misato gambles the Wunder itself. Theorizing that the ship's spinal cord can become a new spear, she launches the vessel, together with Evangelion Units 08, 09, 10, 11, and 12, into the eye of Evangelion Imaginary, sacrificing her life and the ship to deliver the weapon to Shinji Ikari inside Minus Space.

Holding the will of humanity in his hands, Shinji settles his farewells and prepares to trigger Neon Genesis by piercing Evangelion Unit-01, an act expected to destroy every Evangelion and, presumably, himself. The soul of Yui Ikari intervenes, pushing her son clear of the Eva and driving the spear through Unit-01 and the Gendo-occupied Evangelion 13 in his place. The strike ripples outward, depicted impaling every Evangelion seen across the film series.
