Aquaria

Every Atlantean carries the traits of an upright fish, and the queen is no exception: fins jut from her arms and run along her spine, while a soft light-blue tint covers most of her skin. Her wardrobe favors a gown of deeper blue, crowned by a gold tiara whose centerpiece is a single purple jewel. Her physiology lets her draw breath equally above and below the waves, and her body shrugs off the crushing dark and cold far beneath the sea.

Where her husband treated his crown lightly, Aquaria shoulders hers with gravity, pouring herself into her kingdom and paying little mind to whatever troubles plague the land above. Grief hardens into fury when her king is murdered, and she demands that the killer's son answer for the deed. Yet after she watches Invincible put himself on the line for Atlantis, her bitterness fades and she welcomes an end to the long quarrel with the surface world.

For more than ten years Aquaria held Atlantis together by herself while Aquarus spent his hours masquerading with his surface allies. She was present at the Guardians of the Globe funeral, where she saw Olga crumple in grief over losing her own husband, Josef. Once Omni-Man abandoned Earth, the queen vowed to drown the eastern seaboard unless the hero's son stood in for him during an Atlantean rite. Mark took on the Depth Dweller, and after the beast slipped free and threatened to slaughter the queen along with her subjects, he shielded them all. His rescue carried him through the ritual, and he was absolved of the blood his father spilled in slaying the ruler, settling the account in Nolan's name.
